The growing body of evidence around web design’s influence on user decision-making challenges several of these assumptions directly, and understanding where the conventional wisdom goes wrong is often more useful than reinforcing what everyone already thinks they know. Here are five of the most persistent myths, examined against what the research actually shows.

Myth 1: Users Read Your Page Carefully Before Deciding Anything

This one is foundational to a lot of bad design decisions. The assumption is that users encounter a page, read it systematically from top to bottom, absorb the value proposition, weigh it against their needs, and then decide. In practice, none of that happens. Eye-tracking research consistently shows that users scan, skip, and form gut-level judgments within milliseconds—before they’ve consciously read a single sentence.

The implication for design is significant. If users are not reading carefully, then long paragraphs of explanatory copy are not the primary conversion mechanism. Visual hierarchy, clear heading structure, and the placement of trust signals matter more than text volume. Design that assumes a careful reader will miss the user who actually lands on the page. Eye-tracking studies repeatedly show an F-shaped or spotted scanning pattern—users read the top of the page, skim the left margin, and only occasionally dip into body paragraphs. Structure that places key decision information in those scan paths outperforms structure that buries it in dense prose, regardless of how well that prose is written.

Effective design curates information for the decision moment. It surfaces the two or three facts that reduce uncertainty most efficiently and presents supporting detail progressively, behind expandable sections or secondary pages. The goal is not maximum information—it’s minimum necessary information, delivered at the right moment in the right format.

Myth 3: Users Trust Businesses with Elaborate, Feature-Rich Sites

There’s a persistent belief that the more a site does—animations, interactive demos, parallax scrolling, video backgrounds—the more credible it appears. The opposite is often true. Stanford Web Credibility Research and subsequent studies consistently find that design simplicity, visual consistency, and clean organization are stronger trust signals than visual complexity. Elaborate features that slow page load or distract from the central task actively undermine the credibility they were meant to build.

What users actually read as trustworthy includes: a clean layout, readable typography, professional photography, visible contact information, and recognizable third-party trust indicators. These are not glamorous design decisions. But they are the ones that show up in higher conversion rates, and they tend to be undervalued in design conversations that prioritize novelty. A well-placed security badge or a consistent color palette does more trust-building work than most interactive features, and it does it faster.

Myth 4: Mobile Users Have Different Goals Than Desktop Users

This myth has shaped mobile design strategy for years—the idea being that mobile users are on the go, distracted, looking for quick answers, while desktop users are ready to make real decisions. The research has largely dismantled this framing. Users make significant purchases, complete lengthy forms, and research major decisions on mobile at rates that have been rising steadily for a decade. They do not have different goals; they have different constraints.

Designing for mobile decision-making means accounting for smaller tap targets, variable connection speeds, and the need for above-the-fold clarity—not assuming that mobile visitors aren’t ready to commit. Sites that treat mobile as a simplified shortcut for casual browsers leave a substantial share of serious purchase intent unserved. The constraints are real—one-handed navigation, frequent interruption, narrower viewports—but they call for design adaptations, not reduced ambitions about what mobile users will do.

Myth 5: If the Product Is Good Enough, Design Doesn’t Matter That Much

This is perhaps the most widespread and damaging myth in the category, particularly in product-led companies where engineering and product teams often have more cultural authority than design teams. The reasoning sounds plausible: a superior product will win on its merits, and design is a surface concern.

The problem is that users never encounter the product in a design-free context. They encounter it through a website, an app, a landing page—and the design of that encounter shapes how they perceive the product before they’ve experienced it directly. A genuinely good product housed in a confusing, slow, visually inconsistent site will underperform a comparable product with better presentation, because users make quality inferences from the quality of the interface. The interface is evidence. It is not separate from the product’s value; it is part of how that value is communicated and evaluated.

Dismantling these myths doesn’t mean design solves every conversion problem. A weak offer wrapped in excellent design is still a weak offer. But design that operates on flawed assumptions about how users read, decide, and trust will consistently leave performance on the table—and the gap tends to be larger than most teams expect until they measure it directly. Correcting the underlying assumptions is the necessary prerequisite to correcting the design.
